Finding Your Way In Life

I remember reading a book called Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa that reminded me of the art of finding your way of life. Miyamoto Musashi didn’t start off as this incredible samurai warrior. The man was a directionless brute who got himself into trouble through his actions that could have ended his life prematurely. Thanks to a monk, he was spared. Musashi did have to undergo some torture and humiliating acts from the villagers whom he’d caused a lot of grief towards.

Through his imprisonment, Musashi underwent some educational training by reading through old scrolls and doing a bit of self-reflection on his past sins. To keep it simple, he succeeded in being rehabilitated and chose the path of constant self-improvement as a man, warrior, and spiritual teacher. Musashi knows his journey will bring him various problems, yet he fully accepts his newfound life of becoming the greatest self-taught warrior in Japan. An unorthodox warrior with a strict training regiment.

Most of us are finding our way of life. Whether that is moving to a new city or country, going after a dream, finding a fulfilling career, etc. We may not see the picture vividly, but the vision remains powerful as we navigate the hurdles of our struggles. The way isn’t going to be clear, and it’ll take time to discover what will make us see how our vision shapes us.

Every day, I am always finding the way. This would entail improving my mindset by reading books, picking up new hobbies, exploring new opportunities to learn a new skill, talking to different kinds of people, getting out of my comfort zone, and setting new goals. Like Musashi, I was directionless. But with the help of good people in life and self-reflection as my teacher, I found a new way of going about my life. Seeking new challenges to enhance my overall growth as an individual.

Finding your way in life will tend to bring you spoiled fruits. However, if you keep at it and hold on, you’ll find that you may have a fresh basket of fruits by your determined labor.
