I Miss The Old School Cartoon Network

I miss the old Cartoon Network shows. They were fun, incredible, hilarious, imaginative, wholesome, and along with action-packed stories. My childhood is filled with great memories of waking up every day watching shows like Teen Titans, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Codename: Kids Next Door, Foster’s Homes for Imaginary Friends, Camp Lazlo, High High Puffy AmiYumi, What’s New, Scooby-Doo?, Justice League, Static Shock, X-Men: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Superman: The Animated Series, Ben 10, Total Drama Island, The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, Ed, Edd n Eddy and etc.

I could have never imagined as a kid seeing the quality of cartoon shows ever decreasing in today’s time. In my opinion, everything has just gotten way too corporate and there doesn’t seem to be a need to take risks of creating original stories. Plus the animation styles for the shows of today don’t look great.

What I loved about the 90s and 2000s cartoon shows was how they took enough risks to produce memorable cartoons that defined Cartoon Network with shows that had important themes. For example, Teen Titans (2003) and Static Shock (2000) both had episodes on why racism is bad and how to handle such a serious situation without violence. Another great episode I loved from Static Shock was how they covered homelessness and why it’s important to have compassion just as Jesus Christ would.

The old Cartoon Network made my childhood a happy place where I could be at peace. I often think back on the fond memories I would never want to forget of how I saw a bright and hopeful future. However, once I reached my late 20s reality hit me right in the gut. Worrying about bills, lack of job opportunities, debt, AI taking over various industries, high cost of living, hook-up culture, and worldwide depression among Millennials and Gen Z makes my nostalgia ever so present these days.

On the bright side, when I go back to watching all of my favorite shows I can still grasp onto hope despite the negativity in this world.
